Infographic: How Do You Compare to a Winter Athlete?

Speed Skating

Average Adult: 10 – 15 mph
Bonnie Blair: 28 mph
Ice Skating Tip: Build muscle strength. The stronger your legs are, the more power they can generate. A strong upper body and core support proper form and reduce fatigue.

Downhill Skiing

Advanced Amateur Adult: 30 – 40 mph
Lindsay Vonn: 80+ mph
Skiing Tip: 2-step breathing technique contributes to speed. Focus on deep, diaphragmatic breathing. Proper breathing prevents chest tension, improves balance through the core and enhances oxygen uptake for better stamina.

Hockey

Average Adult: 8 – 15 mph
Connor McDavid: 24.1 mph
Hockey Tip: Leg strength drives speed. Focus on low stance and stride with your legs. Legs should be doing 60% of the work while 30% comes from the core and 10% from the arms.

Snowboarding

Advanced Amateur Adult: 5 – 10 feed of air
Shaun White: 23 feet of air
Snowboarding Tip: Static stretching releases muscles, reducing force and power. Try dynamic stretching before going out, paying extra attention to the hamstrings, quads and glutes.

Studies show that exercising with someone can improve fitness, fun and consistency – especially if they challenge you.
