For Mom (Keep It Simple)

  • Comfortable clothes for after birth
  • Slippers and shower shoes
  • Lip balm (hospital air = dry lips)
  • Snacks and drinks (especially for late night cravings)
  • Optional: your own labor gown (most people use the hospital’s)

The hospital usually provides gowns, underwear, socks, pads and recovery essentials.

For Baby (Less Is More)

  • Going-home outfit & blanket
  • Mittens or socks for hands (to prevent scratches)
  • Special items for photos (name sign, sentimental pieces)
  • Car seat (and remember to properly install the base beforehand)

The hospital typically provides hats, blankets, diapers, wipes, onesies and formula/pacifiers if needed.

For Partner / Support Person (Be Ready to Support Mom)

  • Comfortable clothes
  • Snacks and drinks
  • A book or iPad
  • A small bluetooth speaker (especially if mom has a favorite playlist)
  • Personal medications (e.g., pain relievers, heartburn meds)

Note: Hospitals don’t provide any medication for support persons.

Pro Tip

You really don’t need to overpack – hospitals provide most essentials. Focus on comfort and a few personal touches that will make your experience easier and more meaningful.
