Young Attorney Sheds Pounds and Gains Confidence After Undergoing Gastric Bypass Surgery
May 29, 2018
Heather Moseman, 40, is a successful businesswoman and attorney who appeared to have everything going for her – with one exception.
“In October 2011, I was more than 100 pounds overweight and desperately needed to lose weight for good,” Heather said. “I was facing serious health problems like sleep apnea and liver issues and even went to the emergency room because I thought I was having a heart attack. I longed to be healthy, energetic and active.”
After being unsuccessful at every diet imaginable, Heather decided to call University Hospitals Digestive Health Institute Nutritional Health & Bariatric Surgery Center. She attended a free information session where she learned about her options. Here, Heather would make a decision that would change her life forever: She decided to have weight loss surgery.
“Everyone at UH Nutritional Health & Bariatric Surgery Center was incredibly supportive,” said Heather. “They explained the types of bariatric surgery, the recovery period, the side effects that may happen, and how to avoid serious problems. They were so amazing, even helping me push the surgery through with my insurance.”
Heather chose to have gastric bypass surgery. With this type of weight loss surgery, the surgeon reduces the stomach from the size of a football to the size of a golf ball. Then the intestine is rerouted to alter how food is absorbed in the intestine. The result? Heather has lost a total of 164 pounds and counting. She reports that she has very little appetite and is satisfied with about 1,000 calories a day, mostly lean protein and salads.
“For me, the biggest shock was how rapidly the pounds dropped,” Heather said. “I lost 65 pounds the first three months. One year later, I’m 10 dress sizes smaller and love to go shopping. I go to parties with my husband, and people don’t recognize me. I am thrilled!”
After her surgery, Heather stayed at University Hospitals for two nights and spent about three weeks recovering. She had no restrictions in activity after her surgery. Heather enthusiastically states that she would have weight loss surgery again in a heartbeat. Not only has her self-confidence soared but people now see her for who she is: An energetic, healthy and attractive woman.
