Accolades earned by University Hospitals Rainbow Babies & Children's physicians extend from leadership of influential journals to American Academy of Pediatrics Executive Committees to state and national awards and invited congressional testimony.
Cynthia Bearer, MD, PhD Chief of Neonatology at UH Rainbow, has been appointed to a third term as editor in chief of the journal Pediatric Research. The influential journal publishes original translational research papers, invited reviews and commentaries on the etiologies and treatment of diseases of children and disorders of development, extending from basic science to epidemiology and quality improvement. Dr. Bearer is a nationally recognized expert in pediatric environmental health, with research funded by the NIH, CDC, and U.S. EPA.
Michael S. Dell, MDVice Chair for Education at UH Rainbow, has won the 2025 Teaching/Education Award from the Council on Medical Student Education in Pediatrics (COMSEP). This award recognizes Dr. Dell’s exemplary contributions to curriculum development and programming within pediatric medical student education. COMSEP particularly honored Dr. Dell for his leadership in local and national curriculum development and interventions that increased learner satisfaction and improved educational outcomes.
Ryan Farrell, MDUH Rainbow pediatric endocrinologist and father of a child with a rare disease, joined an invited panel of experts for a U.S. Congressional briefing on how to sustain innovation in rare disease treatments. Dr. Farrell addressed U.S. regulatory and economic policies that promote rare disease treatment access and the risks of failing to maintain US leadership in rare disease innovation in the future. The panel also addressed challenges patients and families face and advocated for predictable behavior in review of potential new drugs, as well as better avenues for dialogue between the FDA, CBER, rare disease communities, and drug developers.
Grace Kim, MD,PediaPediatric hospitalist at UH Rainbow,has joined theExecutive Committee of the American Academy of Pediatrics Section on Section on Hospital Medicine (SOHM). Members of this committee are elected by the SOHM members and are responsible for advancing the field of pediatric hospital medicine through various initiatives. The committee oversees a wide range of SOHM activities, such as the Pediatric Hospital Medicine (PHM) Conference, professional development programs and advocacy efforts.
Raymond Liu, MDUH Rainbow pediatric orthopaedic surgeon has joined theExecutive Committee of the American Academy of Pediatrics Section on Orthopaedics. This new appointment builds on his previous experience on the AAP Orthopaedics Section’s Nominations Committee and Policy/Publications Committee. As an Executive Committee member, Dr. Liu will guide the AAP in advocating for pediatric musculoskeletal care, educating AAP physicians on musculoskeletal issues, and providing a forum for residents and medical students to develop their presentation skills.
Noam Stern, MDUH Rainbow Chief of Pediatric Palliative Medicine, has been named the 2025 William Cotton, MD, FAAP Pediatrician Advocate of the Year by the Ohio Chapter of the American Academy of Pediatrics. Dr. Stern was recognized for his incredible advocacy on behalf of Ohio’s children - particularly for founding the Store It Safe City designation, a program that began in a Cleveland suburb and has since expanded to cities across Ohio.
