Pediatric Orthopaedic Update | Winter 2022

By Justin Mistovich, MD, MBA

The University Hospitals Rainbow Babies & Children’s Pediatric Orthopaedic Clinical Fellowship continues to attract competitive candidates both nationally and internationally. This year, we received a record number of applications. Our fellowship is accredited by the Pediatric Orthoapedic Society of North America, and takes a unique, hybrid approach to training. The first six months are spent rotating on a specific service, followed by an individualized schedule that meets the needs of the fellow. This allows fellows to develop deep expertise in their specific area of clinical interest along with a strong foundation in all aspects of pediatric orthopaedics.

Fellows spend time with our faculty at both UH Rainbow Babies & Children’s Hospital, the region’s only level 1 pediatric trauma center in northern Ohio as well as a tertiary referral center, and MetroHealth Medical Center. Fellows have a robust clinical and operative experience, with our faculty performing about 1,000 cases annually with more than 12,000 outpatient clinical visits. Fellows also have protected research time, allowing them to take advantage of multicenter study groups and unique institutional resources to fully develop into surgeon scientists.

Our current fellow, Mohamed Yousef, MD, PhD, comes to us from Boston, where he most recently served as a research fellow in the Department of Orthopedics and Physical Rehabilitation at the University of Massachusetts. In addition to being an integral part of the clinical team, Dr. Yousef is also actively involved in scholarly activity and is currently investigating risk factors for implant failure after posterior spinal fusion surgery for adolescent idiopathic scoliosis.

Our previous fellow, Dr. Philip Hanna, is currently at the University of Connecticut, where he is completing an additional clinical fellowship in sports medicine.
