Innovations in Orthopaedics | Fall 2021

University Hospitals Cleveland Medical Center is further extending flagship healthcare into Cleveland’s East Side communities. Late last year, the health system entered into strategic partnerships with Lake Health and Western Reserve Hospital to fulfill increasing demand for regional access to patient care. In response, the University Hospitals Department of Orthopaedics recently hired three highly trained orthopedic surgeons who will offer innovative surgical techniques and individualized care near patients’ homes and workplaces.

“At UH, we have positioned specialists throughout Northeast Ohio to best support our growing patient population,” says James Voos, MD, Chair of the Department of Orthopaedic Surgery at University Hospitals Cleveland Medical Center. “One of the things I’m most proud of is that we have this incredible group of orthopaedic physicians who can provide expert care very close to home.”

recently completed a Clinical Fellowship in Adult Reconstruction at Massachusetts General Hospital/Harvard Medical School. “Dr. Cohen-Levy brings a valuable skill set to our growing number of patients in need of hip and knee replacement,” Dr. Voos says. “In addition, he is contributing to our research initiatives and will play a key role in continuing our academic training of residents.” With an interest in biomechanics, he is driving orthopedic research and technology forward. Dr. Cohen-Levy graduated with honors from the University of Florida and continued there to earn a Master of Science in Management. He earned a Doctor of Medicine from Albert Einstein College of Medicine.
  • Jordan Grier, MD,

is a hand and upper extremity surgeon specializing in treating disorders of the hand, wrist, elbow and shoulder in adults and children. “I would say that there is incredible demand from our patients for these procedures,” Dr. Voos says. “Dr. Grier grew up in Painesville — just east of town — and now will help us reach our eastern corridor to offer advanced techniques, including microsurgery, peripheral nerve surgery and reconstruction.” Fellowship-trained at the OrthoCarolina Hand Center, he earned his undergraduate degree with distinction at The Ohio State University prior to completing his medical degree and residency training at Duke University Medical Center.
  • Brandon Jonard, MD,

holds the distinction of having completed two fellowships, one in orthopaedic trauma at Indiana University and a second in orthopaedic oncology at The Ohio State University. “Dr. Jonard's extensive training uniquely prepares him to take care of two groups of patients that are of high need,” Dr. Voos says. “One of those is patients who have orthopaedic tumors, and he is expanding our expertise to the East Side in partnership with our orthopaedic department and the UH Seidman Cancer Center.” Additionally, his trauma training will provide trauma patients with local emergency care while supporting the UH Level 1 Trauma Center at Main Campus. Dr. Jonard earned a Bachelor of Science degree at Ohio State and his medical degree at Northeast Ohio Medical University. He completed his orthopaedic residency at Summa Health in Akron.

All three surgeons hold appointments as Assistant Professors of Orthopaedic Surgery at Case Western Reserve University School of Medicine and will be instrumental in educating the next generation of orthopaedic residents. “We’re a department that continues to grow. Not only do we take great clinical care of our patients, but we also strive to offer the most advanced procedures and treatments available,” Dr. Voos says. “With the addition of these three exemplary surgeons, we carry forward our mission of being very active clinically while continuing the translational research that is crucial to the identity of our department.”
