UH Orthopedic Surgeons Ranked Among Nation’s Top Researchers for Groundbreaking Sports Medicine Advances

University Hospitals is home to some of the nation’s most impactful orthopedic research leaders. James Voos, MD, Chairman of Department of Orthopaedic Surgery, UH Cleveland Medical Center, Head Team Physician for the Cleveland Browns, and Medical Director for the Cleveland Ballet, ranks in the top 1% of orthopedic researchers in the U.S., according to Avant-Garde Health. Dr. Voos, also the Jack and Mary Herrick Distinguished Chair in Orthopedics and Sports Medicine at UH, and the Charles H. Herndon Professor at Case Western Reserve University School of Medicine, is widely recognized for his pioneering work on ACL injuries and the use of wearable technology to improve athlete recovery and prevent future injury.
Joining him at the top of national rankings is Jacob Calcei, MD, Assistant Professor, Department of Orthopaedic Surgery at the School of Medicine, is recognized in the top 2–3% of researchers for his for ongoing research in wearable technology, ACL injuries and improving athlete safety and performance - specifically how culture expansion alters human bone marrow-derived stem cell production of osteoarthritis-relevant cytokines and growth factors. His recent publications also draw attention to the high prevalence of work-related musculoskeletal disorders and limited evidence-based ergonomics in orthopedic surgery.
Also placing in the top 5% nationally are University Hospitals orthopedic and sports medicine experts Michael Salata, MD; Michael Karns, MD; Shana Miskovsky, MD; Robert Gillespie, MD; Brian Victoroff, MD; and Alexander Rascoe, MD. Their research spans hip preservation, rotator cuff repair, cartilage restoration, foot and ankle injuries and more.
