UH Clinical Update | December 2022

Amy R. Grube, MD, a pediatric specialist in the Division of Emergency Medicine at University Hospitals Rainbow Babies & Children’s Hospital, served as the Interim Medical Director of Pediatrics at the University Hospitals Rainbow Babies & Children’s Ahuja Center for Women & Children from November 2021 to July 2022.

She was recently named a “Dinner with the Doc” honoree for the commitment to value she showed in that role, which she exhibited in a number of ways, such as by improving patient throughput delays by decreasing variation in provider workflow and screening.

Dr. Grube was nominated for this honor by Stacy Smith, Nurse Manager at the UH Rainbow Ahuja Center for Women & Children, who mentions Dr. Grube’s collaborative nature: “She truly understands how impactful a professional and committed working relationship can be with nursing.  She attended and was an active member of several meetings outside of what is required, such as nursing team building meetings, to demonstrate her support of nursing and provide a listening ear on how relationships can be improved and maintained in our busy pediatric practice.”

Ms. Smith also notes that Dr. Grube led efforts to improve provider charge documentation, where there had previously had been a lag time ranging from several days to weeks. Through Dr. Grube’s concentrated efforts and focused attention to detail, the time this documentation took was improved by more than 50 percent.

And, she says, “Dr. Grube was known for being transparent with all colleagues and actively listened to staff and to our patients to ensure she remained a global voice for our community and our team members.”

Dr. Grube is known for her focus on patient experience. She minimized delays in test result notification and improved access for new patients, who can now be seen by a caregiver within seven days. She included resident team members in the process, considering them critical to the success of the patients’ experience.

“Our team at the UH Rainbow Ahuja Center for Women & Children is better for her leadership, for the value she added and for the passion she has for her specialty,” says Ms. Smith.

Dr. Grube still works at the center, seeing patients and precepting residents; she also is the Education Lead there.

She is a graduate of the Ohio State University College of Medicine and Public Health; her residency in pediatrics was at Children’s National Medical Center.

Congratulations to Dr. Grube on her “Dinner with the Doc” honor.
