James E. Voos, MD, has been named Chair of the Department of Orthopaedics at University Hospitals Cleveland Medical Center. He served as the interim Chair for the past eight months.

Dr. Voos is a renowned expert in Orthopaedic Surgery and Sports Medicine and a faculty member at UH since 2014. He will also serve as the System Lead for Orthopaedic Surgery in development of an integrated Orthopaedic Institute.

“Dr. Voos has demonstrated extraordinary leadership capabilities while serving as interim Chair,” said Daniel I. Simon, MD, President, University Hospitals Cleveland Medical Center. “He will continue to advance our orthopaedic clinical, educational and research objectives.”

He will have overall responsibility for the planning, growth and operational management of the department’s clinical activities, plus oversight of resident teaching programs and research.

Dr. Voos is an Associate Professor of Orthopaedic Surgery at Case Western Reserve University School of Medicine. He is also the Jack and Mary Herrick Endowed Director of Sports Medicine at UH Cleveland Medical Center and Head Team Physician for the Cleveland Browns.

Additionally, he oversees the continued development and expansion of sports medicine across our system. Fueled by his leadership and a passion for advancing the safety and education of athletes, UH has created a comprehensive, innovative and evidence-based program to enhance player performance, injury prevention and overall health.

“Dr. Voos is a visionary leader of not only our Sports Medicine Institute, but also inspires our Joint and Spine Institutes to provide exceptional care for thousands of patients across NE Ohio,” said Cliff Megerian, MD, President of UH Physician Network and System Institutes.

Dr. Voos has dedicated more than a decade to aiding athletes at the professional, college and high school levels. Prior to arriving at UH, Dr. Voos spent three seasons with the Kansas City Chiefs and two with the New York Giants. He currently oversees all medical aspects of the Cleveland Browns medical affiliation.

He earned his medical degree at the University of Kansas School of Medicine. He completed his orthopaedic surgery residency and sports medicine fellowship training at the Hospital for Special Surgery in New York City.

He has been selected as a Top Doctor in Northeast Ohio as reported in Cleveland Magazine from 2016-2018. He was also selected as a Crain’s Magazine Who to Watch in Healthcare in 2017.
