More than 2000 people simulate brain surgery at the same time

University Hospitals neurosurgeons Dr. Nicholas Bambakidis and Dr. Warren Selman participated in what may be have been the largest virtual reality activity on record. More than 2,000 neurosurgeons at the Congress of Neurological Surgeons raised their phones to inches from their faces and peered through specialized lenses to see a simulation of a brain suffering a cerebral hemorrhage. The demonstration, using a mobile application from Cleveland-based Surgical Theater, highlights ways in which neurosurgeons can map out plans to approach procedures. Surgical Theater was developed with help from Drs. Selman, Bambakidis, and other UH neurosurgeons. The neurosurgical congress has applied to Guinness World Records to certify the demonstration as having the most simultaneous participants in a live VR experience, according to the Boston Globe, which reported on the event. Dr. Selman was a presenter and Dr. Bambakidis was a panel moderator in the program.
