UH Distinguished Physician Class 2025

By Lisa R. Riordan

University Hospitals is proud to recognize 26 exceptional clinicians as the 2025 Class of Distinguished Physicians—an honor that celebrates not only clinical excellence, but also the profound impact these individuals have on our patients, learners, and colleagues.

Now in its eighth year, the Distinguished Physician designation honors those who exemplify the highest standards of medical practice and mentorship. These physicians are nominated by department chairs and senior faculty for their extraordinary contributions to patient care, education, and innovation.

A Night of Recognition and Reflection

The 2025 Distinguished Physicians were honored during a special evening celebration on November 5, where UH leadership gathered to reflect on the profound impact these clinicians have made across the health system. The event featured heartfelt remarks that underscored the honorees’ unwavering commitment to excellence in patient care, education, and innovation. Leaders from across UH shared stories of inspiration, gratitude, and admiration, highlighting how these physicians have become trusted caregivers, mentors, and role models. The evening served as a powerful reminder of the values that define our institution and the individuals who bring them to life every day.

“These physicians are more than experts in their fields—they are the ones we trust with our own families,” said Nicole C. Maronian, MD, FACS, President of UH Medical Group, Carol and Arthur F. Anton Chair in Physician Leadership and the Richard W. and Patricia R. Pogue Leadership Chair in Otolaryngology-Head and Neck Surgery. “They embody the values of compassion, professionalism, and lifelong learning. Their leadership and dedication elevate the care we provide across the system.”

UH CEO Cliff A. Megerian, MD, FACS, Jane and Henry Meyer Chief Executive Officer Distinguished Chair added, “They stand out for their unparalleled depth of knowledge, a profound understanding of their respective fields, and an unwavering commitment to staying at the forefront of medical advancements. These individuals are a beacon of hope, offering comfort and solace to those in need.”

What Sets Them Apart

Distinguished Physicians are often referred to as “doctors of doctors”— the clinicians colleagues turn to for their own care. They are:

  • Recognized for their deep clinical expertise and compassionate, effective care.
  • Trusted mentors and educators who inspire the next generation of caregivers.
  • Leaders in quality, safety, and innovation, often shaping best practices and advancing new technologies.
  • Champions of cultural competency and patient-centered care.
  • Frequently sought out by peers, patients, and learners alike for their wisdom, humility, and humanity.

Each awardee is presented with a new lab coat bearing this distinguished new title along with a UH presidential coin and a UH commemorative pin.

“These remarkable physicians are more than just exceptional caregivers — they are also dedicated educators and mentors,” said Donna M. Plecha, MD, President of Clinical Council Chairs and Chair of the Department of Radiology and the Ida and Irwin Haber and Wei-Shen Chin, MD, Chair in Radiology. “Their commitment to teaching and guiding medical students, residents, and fellows is truly inspiring. The knowledge and values they impart will continue to shape the future of medicine for years to come.”

“It is a privilege to take part in this meaningful tradition and honor the 2025 Distinguished Physician Class,” said Daniel I. Simon, MD, President of Academic & External Affairs and Chief Scientific Officer and the Ernie and Patti Novak Distinguished Chair in Health Care Leadership. “We are particularly proud that the chairs, mentors and families of these special doctors can come together to celebrate their recognition as expert and compassionate caregivers who touch and change the lives of so many patients in our community.”
