Multidisciplinary Clinics for Specialized Urology Care
We understand the importance of a holistic approach to care for your child’s condition, so our pediatric urologists are actively involved in several specialty clinics for complex conditions, including:
Bladder and bowel dysfunction clinic: A joint clinic with the pediatric digestive health specialists, the bowel and bladder dysfunction clinic is available to patients with conditions that affect both systems such as incontinence, urinary tract infections (UTIs) and constipation in children that can overlap and are inter-related. Patients receive a comprehensive assessment from a multidisciplinary team that often includes same-day appointments with a pediatric specialist in gastroenterology and urology. Our experts safely guide patients and families to the right level of care for a wide variety of bowel and bladder issues.
Kidney stones and complex renal anomalies program: Families can expect a collaborative approach to kidney stone treatment and other complex renal anomalies that focuses on the least invasive treatment for the best outcome. Our pediatric urologists work closely with pediatric nephrologists for medical evaluation and treatment of kidney stone disease. After treatment, patients and families participate in monthly interdisciplinary conferences to discuss specific patient needs and design kidney stones treatment plans.
Our team is also aware of the risks as overtreatment of other conditions that can lead to antibiotic resistance or kidney issues. Our pediatric urology specialists work closely with many other pediatric specialists to protect children’s kidneys while undergoing other treatment.
Spina Bifida: While spina bifida is a congenital condition that affects the spinal cord and surrounding nerves, it can have a significant impact on many other systems within a child’s body. In fact, the most common causes of additional problems for patients with spina bifida are related to kidney failure in children and sepsis from urinary tract infections. Our Spina Bifida Clinic is uniquely led by a pediatric urologist to provide the unique expertise needed to address urinary tract and complex kidney problems in patients who suffer from this disorder.
With so many systems affected by this disease, we know the importance of convenient access to a wide variety of specialists in a single location at a single time. Our multidisciplinary team includes physicians and nurses that specialize in the following:
- Pediatric neurology
- Pediatric urology
- Pediatric neurosurgery
- Pediatric neuropsychology
- Pediatric gastroenterology
- Pediatric orthopedics
- Developmental behavioral pediatrics
Together, we develop an individualized care plan for your child to help manage symptoms and improve quality of life. Some patients, including those with the myelomeningocele form of spina bifida, require more frequent assessments, including a comprehensive annual evaluation.
