Minimally Invasive Surgery

University Hospitals Rainbow Babies & Children’s Hospital Center for Minimally Invasive Pediatric Surgery is dedicated to one of the most exciting fields of surgery. Our team of board certified pediatric specialists utilize minimally invasive surgical techniques and approaches that help your child heal better and faster. Our physicians, faculty of the Case Western Reserve University (CWRU) School of Medicine, conduct research on minimally invasive surgical techniques giving our patients access to breakthrough therapies long before they are available nationwide. They also train other surgeons, both nationally and internationally, to perform these techniques.

At UH Rainbow Babies & Children’s Hospital, we’re pioneering groundbreaking surgical therapies that greatly reduce recovery times and provide infants, teens and young adults a speedier return to active life. Minimally invasive surgery is offered in a broad range of surgical specialties spanning general surgery, neurosurgery, orthopaedic surgery, ophthalmology, otolaryngology, plastic surgery, thoracic and urology all supported by a team of board-certified pediatric anesthesiologists.

What is MIS?

Minimally invasive surgery (MIS) is a technique that allows surgeons to operate through tiny incisions utilizing pediatric-sized instruments while achieving the same results as traditional surgery. However, unlike traditional open surgery, which involves large cuts to expose the internal organs being operated on, minimally invasive surgery affords the following advantages:

  • Less pain
  • Less chance of infection
  • Less blood loss
  • Shorter hospital stays
  • Smaller scars
  • Quicker recovery and return to home and/or school

Is Minimally Invasive Surgery for Everyone?

Although minimally invasive surgery is the direction in which much of the medical field is headed, it is not necessarily the right approach for every patient in every situation. It is best to study your options.
