University Hospitals John T. Carey Special Immunology Unit provides care for the whole person, with HIV testing and prevention services and comprehensive care for the HIV positive community. Patients also have access to on-site specialized care as well as mental health counseling, social work services and support groups.

Primary Care Services for HIV Positive Patients
The Special Immunology Unit is one of the largest providers of primary care services for HIV positive patients in Northeast Ohio. Our services include:
- Evaluation and lab monitoring of HIV
- Routine immunizations, including pneumococcal, hepatitis A and B and flu vaccines
- Antiviral therapies and preventive medicines against opportunistic infections
- Drug education, including adherence counseling, side effect management, and assistance obtaining medications
- Dietary counseling to optimize nutrition and assist with diet modification
- Risk reduction counseling regarding safe sex and infection prevention
- Women’s health services, including routine gynecological procedures and breast exams
- Comprehensive dental care through Case Western Reserve University School of Dentistry
- On-site access to HIV treatment trials through the NIH-funded AIDS Clinical Trials Unit
- Referrals to other medical specialties when necessary
- Referrals for substance abuse counseling, mental health services, home healthcare, nursing home care and hospice care services if necessary
Case Management
Our social workers can help ensure that patients have access to federal, state and local resources to support their medical, financial, housing, transportation and social needs.
HIV Testing
The Special Immunology Unit at UH provides free HIV testing four days a week. Our staff is also trained to provide individual counseling to patients before and after receiving test results.

Our program provides pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP), medication to prevent HIV infection for individuals who are at high-risk of acquiring HIV, along with other services and education aimed at preventing the spread of HIV.
