The aorta is the main artery of the body, supplying blood to the circulatory system. The artery rises from the heart, supplying blood to the head and arms from vessels that branch off a top arch (aortic arch). The aorta then continues down through the chest (thoracic aorta) and into the abdomen (abdominal aorta). From the abdominal aorta, five arteries branch away to supply blood to the organs in the abdomen, pelvis and lower extremities.
The Aortic Disease Center of University Hospitals Harrington Heart & Vascular Institute is a nationally recognized high-volume program, offering advanced diagnostic testing and treatment options for patients with all types of acute and chronic/monitored aortic disease.
Aortic Conditions We Treat
We offer a range of standard and patient-tailored treatment options for aneurysms, dissections and other conditions affecting all areas of the aorta – from the aortic root to the abdominal aorta. Treatment options include traditional open surgical repair options, minimally invasive surgical repair and leading-edge endovascular procedures.
Aortic disorders we treat include the following:
Advanced Minimally Invasive Procedures
With expansive knowledge and expertise, Aortic Disease Center also offers minimally invasive therapies for appropriate patients that have been shown to result in shorter hospital stays, faster healing times and fewer respiratory and cardiac complications.
Genetic Evaluation and Counseling
Since some aortic conditions can be hereditary, University Hospitals Harrington Heart & Vascular Institute has genetic counselors and cardiologists who specialize in cardiovascular conditions with genetic factors. Our team will help you determine whether any of your family members are at risk for developing an aortic condition. Family members who are at risk can be treated early and may be able to prevent life threatening issues.
Innovative Research & Clinical Trials
In addition to providing the latest treatments available, we continue to seek new and improved treatment options for aortic conditions. Through our research efforts, we are gaining a greater understanding of how these conditions occur so we can focus on early detection and intervention.
