The Latest Cardiovascular Imaging Techniques
The UH Harrington Heart & Vascular Institute is a global leader in optical coherence tomography, which allows a clinician to see and measure crucial blood vessel characteristics that were either invisible or difficult to observe with older imaging techniques. In addition, we were the first center in the U.S. to introduce HeartFlow® Fractional Flow Reserve Computed Tomography (FFR-CT) to assess the severity of coronary artery disease.
Several of the diagnostic techniques we use to accurately pinpoint heart and vascular problems and design appropriate treatment plans include:
- Cardiovascular magnetic resonance imaging (CMRI): Cardiac MRIs take detailed images of the heart, including chambers and blood vessels of the heart.
- Cardiac stress testing: Exercise stress tests measure how the heart functions when it is required to exercise and work harder than usual.
- Computed tomography (CT) scans: An imaging method that creates cross-sectional pictures of the body, our team uses multi-slice CT imaging and non-invasive coronary artery and cardiac function tests.
- Echocardiograms (Echo): An echocardiogram uses sound waves to create a detailed moving picture of the heart. We use nuclear echocardiography in stress testing to assess heart muscle function and viability.
- Electrocardiograms (ECG): An ECG can uncover issues with heart rhythm by recording the electrical activity generated by the heart muscle as it beats.
In addition, our accredited vascular laboratories across the system provide both physiologic, or non-imaging, and ultrasound imaging testing which includes duplex ultrasound. This advanced ultrasound combines traditional ultrasound and Doppler ultrasound to measure the moving blood flow and identify any issues.
Our cardiovascular technologists are imaging specialists who also participate in clinical trials on an ongoing basis. The research gathered from these trials allow for the continuous improvement of cardiovascular imaging techniques and improvements or enhancements to imaging equipment.
Focus on Research Leads to Breakthrough Treatments
Scientific research and discovery give our team of cardiovascular doctors the ability to use various minimally invasive and surgical therapies to treat both minor and serious heart and vascular conditions. With ongoing research funding from the National Institutes of Health, our patients have access to treatment innovations by participating in our ongoing clinical trials. These trials focus on assessing new procedures, medicines and technologies for treating all types of blood vessel disorders and heart conditions.
Currently, our heart specialists are involved with developing more advanced catheter ablation therapies. This procedure guides a wire to the heart and uses heat or cold energy to destroy heart tissue that may lead to arrhythmias, irregular heartbeats.
University Hospitals is also one of the few medical centers in the world to use an innovative implantable device to treat ventricular arrhythmia, a life-threatening condition.
In addition, we are performing research to determine the molecular basis for factors causing hypertension and the evaluation of anti-hypertensive agents on patients.
Our team also recently opened the first APOLLO trial and implanted the Intrepid transcatheter mitral valve replacement on the first patient involved in the study.
