Chief Residents' Message
Thank you for your interest in our UH Rainbow Babies & Children’s Hospital pediatric residency program. As this year’s chief residents, we are excited to share the unique aspects of our program with you!
UH Rainbow has a storied history of excellence in pediatric care. From humble origins as the UH Rainbow Cottage for Crippled Children in 1891, UH Rainbow has developed into a world-class interdisciplinary patient care and research facility in conjunction with Case Western Reserve University. Residents have opportunities to tap into this history and engage in a wide spectrum of opportunities including research, education, advocacy and global health. Our program has an incredible core of faculty as well as administrative support staff who provide residents with superior medical training. As residents, we tailor our experiences based on career interests and goals, which gives a robust experience and leaves us well prepared for our future career endeavors.
One of the best parts of UH Rainbow is the family of colleagues and lifelong friendships we develop over our 3+ years. Even beyond our residency classes, we connect with hospital staff and faculty – uniquely situated to collaborate with the University Hospitals system and specialties as a whole – in numerous joint events and community-wide efforts. But it is within our classes that we find integral support and friends with whom we can explore Cleveland and beyond, even electing to travel together for vacations and international health trips. On any given day, you’ll find a small group of residents taking advantage of all Cleveland has to offer – from food and drinks at our renowned restaurants and breweries, to getting outside and active in our MetroParks system, to our entertainment and arts district at Playhouse Square, Blossom, Severance Hall or the museums, and of course, cheering on our champion sports teams. Go Cavs, Indians and BROWNS!
Thank you again for your interest in our program! We hope you find UH Rainbow is an excellent place to develop into a pediatrician. We also hope you will find Cleveland is an awesome place to call home – we certainly do! Please do not hesitate to contact us with any questions.
We look forward to meeting you!

2019 – 20 Chief Residents
Q and A with the Chiefs
- Where are you from?
Keith: San Jose, CA originally, then Cincinnati, then Philly -- all feel important
Elyssa: Pittsburgh, PA … woo woo! They let me stay even though I still root for the Pittsburgh sports teams.
Becky: Queens, NY
Erin: Buffalo, NY… home of the Bills! Similar to Cleveland in a lot of ways … growing young population, great food and nice people!
- What is your favorite aspect of the residency program?
Keith: People and a collective willingness to change and evolve. I think this is my ideal size of program to have enough variety of people but still feel close -- even knowing some of the attendings outside of work (i.e. tennis, game nights), The program has also been flexible and responsive to resident insights -- including 6+2 scheduling and other changes to team structure and curriculum.
Elyssa: Hands down the people….knowing my co-residents, chiefs, faculty, and program directors have my back even during tough times is what has allowed me to thrive at Rainbow. No matter how much I love countless qualities of Rainbow, like the dedication to education, awesome ancillary staff and resident wellness, for me, it always comes back to the people.
Becky: How strongly the residency program promotes resident wellness.
Erin: The people! I have made lifelong friends in my co-residents, and acquired mentors in faculty and fellows. Such a supportive and collaborative environment has made all the difference in my residency experience.
- What is your favorite restaurant in Cleveland?
Keith: Fire for breakfast, L’Albatros for lunch, Greenhouse Tavern for dinner. (Mitchell’s for dessert.)
Elyssa: Since obviously ice cream counts as a restaurant … Mitchell’s. The best ice cream you’ll ever taste! I can’t ever go back anywhere else.
Becky: My house …my husband is an amateur chef. Feel free to come sample a meal!
Erin: So hard to choose!! Fat Cats in Tremont for a great ambience and good small plates and drink specials, Mable’s for awesome BBQ downtown and Marble Room for the best steak you’ve ever had and live music.
- What do you like to do in the area on the weekends?
Keith: Run and bike anywhere I can, cook or eat out at any of the amazing restaurants or whatever festivals are going on, or heading to the museums or Botanical Garden. (Especially in winter, hanging out in the tropical greenhouse area watching butterflies while snow falls is trippy good fun.)
Elyssa: Spending as much time outside with my family as possible at the various amazing Cleveland Metroparks, the pools, parks, botanical gardens and new places we’re discovering all the time! My 5-year-old and 3-year-old keep me active and constantly exploring.
Becky: Exploring all the excellent museums around Cleveland with my family. We especially enjoy the art museum and the Museum of Natural History … although we go to the Children’s Museum most often by request of the little people living in my house
Erin: Hmmm … my favorite things to do? Breakfast, brunch, lunch, dinner and happy hour!! Also … outside activities in-between restaurants, like strolling around Edgewater or hiking around the Cleveland Metroparks and nearby state parks.
