Benefits & Perks
Residents are paid according to their level of training.
The 2018 – 2019 salaries are:
- PGY1: $57,475
- PGY2: $59,400
- PGY3: $61,350
- PGY4: $63,860
Each resident has 4 weeks of vacation divided as follows: one 2-week block, one 1-week block and 7 days of flex time. Requests are submitted in advance to the chief residents who review and approve.
Residents receive on-call money that they use by swiping their identification badges at the cafeteria and the Einstein's Bagel and coffee cart in the hospital atrium. Each resident will receive approximately $180 every 6 months. This can be used even when not on call. In addition, breakfast is provided at all morning conferences.
Case Western Reserve University Affiliation
All residents are provided affiliation with Case Western Reserve University. This includes access to gym facilities, libraries, online journal subscriptions, and email. This also includes occasional discounted admission to attractions like the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.
As part of the Case affiliation, all residents have free access to Case's Veale Center gymnasium and athletic facilities. The available facilities include a cardio training room, weight lifting room, swimming pool, racquet ball courts, squash courts, climbing wall, basketball courts, indoor track, and tennis courts. The Veale Center is located across the street from University Hospitals Rainbow Babies & Children's Hospital. Case also has a private fitness center, 1-2-1 Fitness Center, also located across the street from UH Rainbow Babies & Children's Hospital. In addition to a weight and cardio training room, 1-2-1 offers a variety of group exercise classes including cycling, pilates, yoga, and cardio kickboxing. Discounted memberships are available to residents.
There are two medical plans to choose from, including a standard plan and a high-deductible plan with access to a Health Savings Account (HSA). This allows each resident to choose the plan that best fits their needs. Family coverage or individual coverage is available. Coverage is effective the first day of the month coinciding with or following the initial employment date.
Dental coverage is available through CIGNA Dental for residents and their family. Covered services can be obtained in or out of the network. The plan provides coverage for preventive, basic, and major restorative services. The monthly contribution is payroll deducted on a pre-tax basis. Professional Liability Insurance
Professional personnel are covered by the hospital at no cost.
403(b) Matched Retirement Savings Plan: All employees are eligible to contribute to the 403(b) Matched Retirement Savings Plan. Employees with one year of service who have worked at least 1,000 hours are eligible to receive a match. University Hospitals will match 50 percent of the first 6 percent of your contributions. Money the hospital contributes (matched contributions) is 100 percent vested after three years of service.
Educational funds are available for books, journal subscriptions, and conference travel. Allowances are based on training level.
Residents have the opportunity to apply for micro grants to help with the costs of their research projects. Interested residents must complete an application that is then reviewed by the committee.
Residents selected to present posters or conduct platform presentations at national meetings are eligible for travel funds to help offset the cost of airfare, hotel and registration fees. Global Health members also qualify to receive money for away rotations.

- PALS: New interns receive certification, and the PALS book, during orientation week.
- NRP: New interns receive certification, and the NRP book, during orientation week. Residents receive free recertification onsite. Dates and times are coordinated by the chief residents.
- BLS: All new interns are required to have a current BLS card prior to starting residency. Residents are responsible for maintaining BLS certification throughout residency, available free onsite throughout the year.
Resident Wellness & Resources
Our residency Wellness Program helps trainees establish and maintain a work-life balance. Wellness includes self-awareness and healthy choices resulting in a sense of accomplishment, satisfaction, and belonging. Our Wellness Committee is made up of our Program Directors, Chief Residents, coordinators and representatives from each post-graduate-year. The Committee organizes wellness events such as group social activities, sports activities, and cultural events throughout the year. Wellness resources are also posted by the Committee so that residents have access to primary care providers as well as mental health experts to contact during difficult times.
- Graduation Dinner & Awards Ceremony: Our annual celebration of residency graduates.
- Resident Appreciation Week: One week in February with events and prizes where the hospital shows it's thanks to the residents for all the great work they do.
- All Resident Retreat: An annual theme is presented at this retreat to set the stage for the year
- Intern Retreat: A two day retreat in October where the interns have an opportunity to learn, bond, and relax.
- Junior Retreat: The juniors have an opportunity to take a break from work and relax including a visit to the Cleveland Museum of Art.
- Pearls Day: A University Hospitals Rainbow Babies & Children's Hospital tradition where we honor our favorite faculty members. Faculty present “pearls” in an off-beat and fun conference.
- Science Day: For 40+ years, the annual presentation of all resident research occurs in June.

In Our Backyards: Where we like to live and visit!
Clevelanders divide the city into “East side” and “West side,” with the Cuyahoga River being the dividing landmark. Because UH Rainbow Babies and Children's Hospital is on the east side of town, it's most common for residents to live in the near Eastern suburbs, downtown Cleveland, or in the historic urban Cleveland districts just west of the river.
