University Hospitals Rainbow Babies & Children’s Hospital is committed to providing the highest level of trauma care for babies, children and adolescents. As a Level I trauma center within a full-service children’s hospital, we are equipped to handle every type of trauma, even the most complex cases. We work closely with experts across multiple pediatric specialties to ensure comprehensive care for each patient. This multidisciplinary approach is foundational to our trauma program and helps us provide seamless care for the most traumatic injuries.

Level I Pediatric Trauma Center
The American College of Surgeons (ACS) has recognized University Hospitals Rainbow Babies & Children’s Hospital’s Pediatric Trauma Center as the only Level I Pediatric Trauma Center in Cleveland. Inspected routinely by the American College of Surgeons, our program meets stringent patient care criteria for trauma centers and is designated with the very highest level of care. Our trauma program has been a continuously verified Level I Pediatric Trauma Center since 1991.

The verification program ensures that a hospital with a Level I designation not only has the resources necessary to treat severe injuries, but also can provide an entire spectrum of care to address the needs of the patients and necessary psychological and social support for relatives and siblings, all impacted by a profound trauma in the family.
Pediatric Neuro Trauma and Neurosurgery
UH Rainbow’s trauma team has the expertise and experience to treat head trauma in children, including concussions, skull fractures, spinal cord injuries, brain hemorrhages, and others. We work with leading UH Rainbow pediatric specialists in neurology, neurosurgery and other disciplines to provide superior, timely care for babies and children with head and neck injuries.
Pediatric Orthopedic Trauma
Working with UH Rainbow pediatric orthopedic surgeons, the pediatric trauma center team is able to treat a wide range of orthopedic injuries, including fractures, tendon and ligament injuries, and joint dislocations.
Pediatric Plastic Surgery
Many traumatic injuries, such as facial injuries, will require the expertise of a plastic surgeon. Our team works closely with pediatric plastic and maxillofacial surgeons at UH Rainbow to provide timely plastic surgery consultations and reconstructive surgery following a traumatic injury.
Pediatric Dental & Oral Surgery
A pediatric dentist or oral surgeon may be part of the treatment plan for children who experience facial trauma. UH Rainbow Pediatric Trauma Center provides immediate access to these specialists when their skills are needed for trauma to the teeth, gums or jaw.
Pediatric Critical Care
Our pediatric trauma center is able to provide immediate access to UH Rainbow’s pediatric intensive care unit (PICU) when necessary. This 21-bed unit provides around-the-clock care for critically injured and ill children. With a team specially trained in treating critically ill children, our PICU takes care of over 1,500 babies and children every year.
