Research Highlights

A Multicenter Comparison of Open Versus Arthroscopic Fixation for Pediatric Tibial Spine Fractures.  Shimberg JL, Leska TM, Cruz AI Jr, Patel NM, Ellis HB Jr, Ganley TJ, Johnson B, Milbrandt TA, Yen YM, Mistovich RJ; Tibial Spine Research Interest Group.
J Pediatr Orthop. 2022 Apr 1;42 (4):195-200.

This multicenter retrospective cohort study examined the results of open versus arthroscopic treatment of tibial spine fractures at 10 children’s hospitals. We demonstrated no differences in complications, unplanned return to the operating room, or fracture union between groups. However, those who were treated arthroscopically had a greater incidence of identified concomitant injury at the time of surgery, which was statistically significant. Tibial spine fractures frequently do not occur in isolation. This study highlights the importance of either preoperative advanced imaging or a thorough intra-articular examination at the time of surgery.

The Influence of Retrograde Femoral Nail Removal With and Without Interpositional Fat Grafting on Distal Femoral Physeal Behavior: A Sheep Study. Ren BO, Amakoutou K, Knapik DM, Benedick A, Anderson JM, Zirkle LG, Liu RW. J Pediatr Orthop. 2022 Nov-Dec 01;42(10):e994-e1000.
This study, supported by a POSNA Research Grant, demonstrated that removing a retrograde distal femoral nail spanning an open growth plate does not lead to physeal arrest, and that fat grafting is not necessary. This data has helped provide surgeons in low and middle income countries with an additional treatment option when dealing with challenging fractures in the setting of limited resources.

Systematic Isolation of Key Parameters for Estimating Skeletal Maturity on Anteroposterior Wrist Radiographs. Furdock RJ, Huang LF, Sanders JO, Cooperman DR, Liu RW. J Bone Joint Surg Am. 2022 Mar 16;104(6):530-536.
Using the historic Bolton Brush Collection, which was developed in Cleveland, this study systematically identified eight reliable parameters for assessing skeletal maturity which outperformed the Greulich and Pyle atlas and the Sanders staging system. Further work is necessary to determine how this system performs in a modern and clinical population.
