Residency Program Trains Tomorrow’s Leaders in Ophthalmology

The didactic and clinical program for residents in ophthalmology integrates the faculty and facilities of its home institution, University Hospitals Cleveland Medical Center, with the Louis Stokes Cleveland VA Medical Center. Coordinated with this program is an active and diversified research program in which residents participate.

Clinical training reflects a progressive increase in medical and surgical ophthalmic knowledge and skills over three years. Strong didactics and diverse clinical experiences in our hospitals ensures that each resident is well qualified to either enter practice following completion of the residency or pursue a fellowship. Other goals and objectives for our residents include:

• Develop, in each resident, patient care that is compassionate, appropriate and effective for the treatment of health problems
• Demonstrate knowledge about the established and evolving biomedical clinical and cognate sciences and the application of that knowledge to patient care
• Ensuring that each resident is able to investigate and evaluate patient care practices, appraise and assimilate scientific evidence, and improve their patient care practices
• Develop interpersonal and communication skills that result in effective information exchange and teaming with patients, their families and professional associates
• Demonstrate a commitment to carrying out professional responsibilities, adherence to ethical principles, and sensitivity to a diverse patient population
• Demonstrate an awareness and responsiveness to the context of the overall healthcare system and be able to call on system resources to provide care that is of optimal value
