Leading Infectious Disease Research Organization for Vaccine Trials, HIV, TB & Antimicrobial Resistance
Major research programs within the University Hospitals Division of Infectious Diseases & HIV Medicine focus on advancing both basic and translational science in antimicrobial resistance, HIV/AIDS, and tuberculosis — three of the most urgent global health challenges.
Our work integrates expertise in biochemistry, immunology, microbiology, and human genetics, and spans the full research continuum from epidemiological and observational studies to large-scale clinical trials. With a strong emphasis on real-world impact, the Division leads long-standing international research initiatives, including collaborative programs in Uganda focused on HIV/AIDS and tuberculosis. These global partnerships enable the translation of scientific discoveries into effective prevention, diagnostic, and treatment strategies in diverse populations.
In addition to individual investigator-led research, faculty play key roles in leading and contributing to major, multidisciplinary infectious disease programs and research centers, including:
- AIDS Clinical Trials Unit (ACTU)
- Center for Antimicrobial Resistance and Epidemiology Studies (Case VA CARES)
- Geriatric Research Education and Clinical Center (GRECC)
- Tuberculosis Research Unit at Case Western Reserve University (TBRU)
- Uganda-CWRU Research Collaboration (UCRC)
In addition, while not based in the department, the following centers have Infectious Diseases faculty leadership and participation:
- Center for AIDS Research (CFAR)
- Infectious Diseases Clinical Trial’s Unit (IDCTU)
- Visual Sciences Research Center (VSRC)
