University Hospitals Respiratory Health experts have specialized training and experience in caring for adults and children with congenital or acquired pulmonary conditions. And, when appropriate, we collaborate with our colleagues in oncology, cardiology, transplant surgery and thoracic and esophageal surgery to provide patients with the most comprehensive and advanced treatments available for their disease or disorder.

Lung Transplantation

For some patients with severe lung disease, lung transplantation may be the best treatment option. Our pulmonary experts work closely with our colleagues at the UH Transplant Institute to offer this surgical procedure to replace diseased or failing lungs with healthy ones, usually from a deceased donor.

University Hospitals is one of a small number of facilities across the country with the clinical expertise to offer this complex surgery.

Pulmonary Rehabilitation

Many patients with chronic respiratory conditions who remain symptomatic or continue to experience decreased lung function after standard medical treatments, will benefit from participating in a structured pulmonary rehabilitation program. Such programs may include breathing techniques, psychological and nutrition counseling, exercise training and support groups.

The highly successful pulmonary rehabilitation program at University Hospitals is specifically designed to improve quality of life by enhancing respiratory function, restoring independence and helping patients reach their wellness goals.

Smoking Cessation Resources

Smoking is the leading cause of preventable death in the world and the number one reason for acquired lung diseases, including emphysema and lung cancer. In addition, smoking greatly increases one’s risk for heart disease, stroke and oral cancer. The caring support team at UH Respiratory Health are pleased to provide educational materials and smoking cessation programs to help patients who want to quit smoking.

Access to Clinical Trials

The physician scientists are University Hospitals are involved in ongoing research to find new and innovative therapies and/or surgical approaches to care for patients with lung diseases and disorders. For some patients, participation in a clinical trial may be offered as one component of their total treatment plan.
