Resident's Welcome

Welcome to the Department of Neurosurgery at University Hospitals Cleveland Medical Center and Case Western Reserve University. On behalf of our residents, we are excited to share what makes our program such a special place to train.

Our residency is built around a strong sense of teamwork, collegiality, and graduated autonomy. We are fortunate to train in an environment that is truly resident-centric, where residents take ownership of patient care, support one another, and grow together through each stage of training. From the beginning of residency, our trainees gain meaningful operative experience and progressive responsibility, developing the confidence and judgment needed to succeed both in the operating room and at the bedside.

One of the strengths of our program is the early and broad clinical exposure residents receive. This foundation serves our residents well as they advance through training, whether they choose to pursue dedicated research time, an enfolded fellowship, or further subspecialty development. Our faculty are deeply invested in resident education and mentorship, while also giving residents the space to develop independence, refine their decision-making, and shape their own career paths.

Equally important is the culture among the residents. We take pride in being a close-knit, supportive, and diverse group with a wide range of personalities, interests, and backgrounds. We work hard, but we also genuinely enjoy spending time together outside the hospital. Whether it is grabbing dinner, watching a game, exploring the city, or getting together after work, we consider ourselves part of one big family.

Cleveland is also an incredible place to live and train. It remains one of the country’s hidden gems, with an exceptional food scene, local breweries, professional sports teams, beautiful parks, lakefront activities, live music, theater, and world-class cultural institutions. There is always something to do outside of work, and the city offers an outstanding quality of life with affordable housing options in both downtown neighborhoods and surrounding suburbs.
