Research interest: Dr. Stiefel's research is focused on mechanisms by which the (predominantly anaerobic) indigenous intestinal microbiota prevents colonization by exogenous, antibiotic-resistant, potentially pathogenic microorganisms. Also, has a secondary interest in the pathogenesis of infection and/or colonization with Staphylococcus aureus, particularly community-acquired methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (CA-MRSA).
