Inpatient rehabilitation helps people who are experiencing the debilitating effects of an acute injury, impairment or illness. Regardless of the condition, the goal of inpatient rehabilitation is to help the patient function as independently as possible.
At the UH Parma Medical Center Acute Rehabilitation Unit, our compassionate, highly trained, licensed and certified professionals provide nurturing support and physical rehabilitation for a variety of patients. As an acute rehabilitation provider, our unit must provide 15 hours of therapy within a 7-day week in accordance with guidelines established by the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services. Therapy is typically provided for three hours per day, five days a week. Because we are part of a large hospital network, we have access to a broad range of internal resources that allow us to compare outcomes and quality between facilities and programs and share best practices in an effort to stay on the leading edge of patient care.
Patients treated with inpatient rehabilitation generally receive a higher level of care and achieve better outcomes in comparison to other types of rehabilitation programs. Inpatient rehab patients:
- Walk independently sooner
- Go home sooner
- Receive more time and attention from physicians and nurses, including regular visits by their doctor
- Have lower rates of readmission to the hospital during or after treatment

Stroke
Each year, stroke affects millions of Americans – from the nearly 800,000 who suffer a new or recurrent stroke, to the tens of thousands of others in recovery. For survivors, rehabilitation is a critical part of that recovery, often resulting in significant changes to how they live their lives.
Inpatient rehabilitation helps stroke patients achieve the highest level of function possible and allows them to adjust to any mental and physical changes they may experience after a stroke. In addition, inpatient rehabilitation assists stroke patients in relearning skills that were lost or impaired after the stroke.
Neurological Impairment
Neurology rehabilitation is a doctor-supervised program designed for patients with injury to the brain, spinal cord or nerves. People with neurological injuries or diseases sometimes have difficulty moving freely, speaking, swallowing, breathing or learning. In providing neurological rehabilitation, we focus on improving function and helping patients return to a more normal life.

Medical and Debilitating Conditions
Debility rehabilitation helps patients relearn or improve skills they may have lost due to muscle weakness and low endurance after experiencing a long recovery period from an injury or illness. Just as a weight lifter who skips the gym for a few months loses muscle mass, debility patients experience muscle loss from being confined to a bed or a chair for a long period of time.
Doctors can give various types of patients a debility diagnosis. Some of the most common reasons for general debility are related to heart issues, lung problems, and ongoing physical pain. Treating physical debility with inpatient rehabilitation therapy is important because improving muscle strength can increase the chances of the patient returning to a more normal life.
Musculoskeletal/Orthopedic Impairments
Doctor-supervised musculoskeletal rehabilitation is intended for patients with impairments or disabilities due to disease, trauma or other issues related to muscles, joints, nerves, and other parts of the body. A complete musculoskeletal rehabilitation program can improve function, reduce symptoms and restore a patient’s independence.

UH Parma Acute Rehabilitation Unit features open visitation hours for patient families, friends and guests and encourages family to observe and participate in therapy sessions and training.
