Brenda Amburgey’s Story

Brenda Amburgey, RN, joined the nursing staff of UH Avon Rehabilitation Hospital in Sept. 2016 after spending two years as a hospice nurse and more than 10 years in a long-term skilled nursing facility. Caring for people is a passion for her, and the calling to be a nurse runs strong in her family – her mother was a nurse and her daughter is currently studying to be a nurse.

“While I had the opportunity in my career to do some administrative work, I became a nurse to be a hands-on caregiver,” said Brenda. “I have always loved caring for people and I truly enjoy working with patients at the UH Avon Rehab Hospital.”

Brenda’s shifts – usually three 12-hour days per week – have her caring for patients of many ages with a variety of needs. “We’ve had patients in their early 20s up to 101 years-old,” said Brenda. “From post-orthopedic surgery patients, to those who’ve experienced a trauma, to patients who have had tumors removed and need rehabilitation, we’ve seen quite a few diagnoses.”

The opportunity to work with patients of different ages and conditions is part of what Brenda enjoys about her role as a floor nurse at UH Avon Rehabilitation Hospital. “My days are never the same; there’s always a new challenge to take on,” said Brenda. “It keeps me on my toes.”

Some challenges are more difficult to handle, according to Brenda. “Throughout my career, I’ve noticed that people are facing more health issues with higher co-morbidities. Patients with substance abuse issues can make nursing more difficult,” she said. “But, UH is very good about making sure nurses are prepared to tackle any issue. They provide ongoing training and we work through any issues as a team.”

At the end of a shift, Brenda feels good knowing that she has truly made a difference in the lives of her patients. “Being a nurse at UH Avon Rehab Hospital is very rewarding,” she said. “It’s so special when a patient who we cared for who couldn’t walk or talk comes back to see us. Seeing them able to do these things make all of our effort worth it.”
