History of UH North Ohio Heart & Ohio Medical Group
When John W. Schaeffer, MD, FACC, founded North Ohio Heart in 1978, he envisioned a team of dedicated professionals working together using the latest technology, while recognizing that sensitivity and patient trust are essential components of successful medicine.
More than 40 years later, NOH is proud to be among the top cardiology practices in the Great Lakes region, with an experienced team of cardiac experts, specialists, clinical researchers and professionals.
In 2010, the NOH/OMG practice joined services with EMH Regional Healthcare System under the new entity North Ohio Heart, Inc. Four years later, EMH became University Hospitals Elyria Medical Center. Then on January 1, 2015, North Ohio Heart, Inc. and Ohio Medical Group formally became part of UH Elyria Medical Center.
Accreditations
The diagnostic services departments at UH North Ohio Heart are fully accredited by the national society that requires the highest standards of care, performance and accountability.
The diagnostic departments of UH North Ohio Heart were among the first in the nation to achieve accreditation in Nuclear Cardiography (Since 1998), Vascular (Since 1998) and Echocardiography (Since 1999), and each has maintained their accredited status since.
Community Outreach
UH North Ohio Heart and Ohio Medical Group contribute to the local community through the Lorain County Community Foundation.
We’re also a major supporter of the Lorain Free Clinic and a major sponsor of the annual Lorain County Heart Walk.
And since 2009, the American Heart Association (AHA) has recognized NOH/OMG as a Gold Level, Fit-Friendly Company. We offer employees physical activity support, provide healthy eating options at the work site, promote a wellness culture and implemented at least nine criteria (as outlined by the AHA) in the areas of physical activity, nutrition and culture.

Dr. Schaeffer envisioned building a team of dedicated professionals who would work together, using the latest technology, while never losing sight of the fact that personalized sensitivity and patient trust are essential components of successful medicine. He explains his philosophy:
