History

The Department of Pathology at University Hospitals has been at the forefront of basic, translational and clinical research innovation across the field for more than a century, contributing to numerous discoveries and advances in cancer, immunology and neurodegeneration.

Howard T. Karsner, MD, a pioneering, globally recognized pathologist and educator, established the original department in 1929 as the Institute of Pathology of Western Reserve University, serving University Hospitals and the Schools of Medicine and Dentistry.

With the institute, Dr. Karsner, who left Harvard University to become Chairman of the Department of Pathology at Western Reserve in 1914, championed a new national model for an integrated pathology program that combined clinical diagnostics, research and teaching. Dr. Karsner’s vision and legacy in advancing pathological research and teaching have endured, promoting continued clinical and scientific excellence.
