Music And Healing

Using Music Therapy To Promote Healing

In addition to helping musicians with unique medical issues, the Music & Medicine Center at University Hospitals Neurological Institute is dedicated to enhancing the patient experience through the healing power of music.

Research and anecdotal evidence proves the value of music therapy in the hospital setting to be beneficial to patients. Music therapy teams at University Hospitals have witnessed extraordinary results, including individuals waking from a coma during music therapy.

When possible, we use music as a medical treatment both for musicians and others. This is accomplished through:

  • Musical performances by patient, physician and professional ensembles
  • Collaboration with music therapists to enhance healing and promote wellness
  • Diagnosis and treatment of music-related injuries and promotion of overall musician health

Enhancing the Patient Experience With Music

Our center aims to provide a richer cultural environment for patients during their hospital stay, including the opportunity to attend concerts held at various UH locations.

Performers include student and professional musicians from the Cleveland Orchestra, the Cleveland Institute of Music and the Music School Settlement, as well as amateur physician-musicians on staff at University Hospitals Cleveland Medical Center and other University Hospitals facilities.

Treatment through Music and the Arts

UH Cleveland Medical Center already has a nationally recognized Music Therapy Program. Further growth and collaboration through the Center has led to expansion of this program.

Musician Health

Musicians often develop unique injuries that can be devastating and career threatening. The correct diagnosis and management requires expertise available only at tertiary care centers like UH Cleveland Medical Center. The Center is a resource for the health needs of musicians not only in northeast Ohio, but from around the world.
