  • Behavioral health issues such as ADHD and autism

Selecting a Pediatrician for Your Child

Choosing the right doctor for your child is an important decision. Your goal should be to find someone you feel comfortable approaching with questions and concerns, no matter how small.

Beginning your search for a pediatrician well before your baby’s arrival will help ensure you have plenty of time to research and interview prospective providers. Some tips for choosing a pediatrician include:

Talk to people you know and trust

Your family, friends, coworkers and neighbors may be able to recommend pediatricians that they entrust with their own children’s care. This can be a great starting point to help narrow down the list of candidates before making a final decision for your family.

List your priorities and ask questions.

Think about what is important for you and your family and make a list of your priorities. Some questions to ask include:

  • What experience does the physician have? Does he or she have a specialization?
  • Is it more important for my doctor’s office to be near my home or my place of work?
  • What are the office hours? Are there weekend and/or evening hours?
  • Can I access my child’s medical records online?
  • Does the office offer same-day sick appointments?
  • Does the office offer online appointment scheduling?
  • Does the provider accept your medical insurance?

Meet and greet

You may find it helpful to meet with prospective providers before making a selection. This can help you learn about the individual providers and get their stance on topics such as breastfeeding, vaccines and other baby care philosophies to help determine if the provider is a good fit for your family. You can also ask questions about office hours, policies and other relevant information.

When to Schedule Your Baby’s First Appointment

Most pediatricians want to see your baby for the first time about three to five days after he or she is born. Since baby’s exact arrival date is unpredictable, you can usually call to make the first appointment shortly after your baby is born. Your pediatrician’s office will likely have slots reserved for new baby visits so you won’t have to worry about not being able to get an appointment. You can confirm with your pediatrician’s office their preferred timing for your baby’s first visit.
