Child Life Practicum and Clinical Internship Opportunities are Offered for Students in the Child Life Field
The Child Life Clinical Student Program at University Hospitals Rainbow Babies & Children’s Hospital has two different opportunities for students pursuing a career as a Certified Child Life Specialist: a Child Life Practicum and a Child Life Clinical Internship. Applications for both opportunities are typically accepted for three sessions in each calendar year — Winter/Spring, Summer, and Fall.
Our department, Family & Child Life Services, is dedicated to the University Hospitals Cleveland Medical Center’s mission: To Heal, To Teach, To Discover. Our Child Life Clinical Student Program is committed to providing an enriching experience that supports students on their way to becoming a Certified Child Life Specialist. Our Child Life Clinical Student Program is further supported by our Child Life Student Committee made up of Certified Child Life Specialists and a Child Life Student Program Coordinator.
Each multidisciplinary team member in the Family & Child Life Services department is integrated into the Child Life student’s experience. Child Life students are scheduled for various rotations on inpatient and outpatient units. During each rotation, the unit-based Child Life Specialist serves as the student’s Preceptor and mentor. Students are also assigned a Child Life Supervisor who facilitates weekly meetings. These weekly meetings provide the student with additional support, discussion and processing related to their clinical experiences and assignments. UH Rainbow Child Life clinical rotation Preceptors and Supervisors meet the Association of Child Life Professionals (ACLP) criteria.
There are no fees for the Child Life Practicum or Child Life Clinical Internship application process or experience. The UH Rainbow Child Life Clinical Student Program follows the Association of Child Life Professionals (ACLP) application guidelines, deadlines and offer dates. The UH Rainbow Application Packets for the Child Life Practicum and Child Life Clinical Internship must be postmarked by the ACLP’s deadline dates for the specific session in which applying. Application Packets postmarked after the ACLP’s deadline date will not be considered. Please visit the ACLP website (www.childlife.org) for more information.
