Post Pediatric Portal Program Curriculum

The Post Pediatric Portal Program at University Hospitals Cleveland Medical Center and UH Rainbow Babies & Children’s, in collaboration with Case Western Reserve University, provides an immersive, academically rigorous training experience within a nationally recognized center for clinical care, research and education. Fellows develop deep expertise across the full spectrum of child, adolescent and general psychiatry through a thoughtfully structured curriculum that integrates foundational inpatient training with progressive outpatient responsibility, subspecialty exposure and individualized electives.

Year 1: Foundational Clinical Immersion

The first year emphasizes comprehensive exposure to acute psychiatric care across developmental stages and clinical settings:

  • Inpatient General Psychiatry – 4 months
  • Inpatient Child & Adolescent Psychiatry – 4 months
  • General Consultation-Liaison Psychiatry – 1 month
  • Child & Adolescent Consultation-Liaison Psychiatry – 1 month
  • Geriatric Psychiatry – 1 month
  • Addiction Psychiatry – 1 month
  • Adult Neurology – 1 month

This broad-based year builds a strong diagnostic foundation, enhances clinical decision-making and introduces fellows to multidisciplinary collaboration across the health system.

Years 2-3: Advanced Outpatient Training & Subspecialty Development

During the second and third years, fellows transition into longitudinal outpatient roles across both General Psychiatry and Child & Adolescent Psychiatry. Training encompasses a diverse range of therapeutic and systems-based experiences, including:

  • Medication management
  • Psychotherapy
  • Community psychiatry clinics
  • Intensive outpatient programs
  • Partial hospitalization programs
  • Residential treatment settings
  • School-based psychiatry

Fellows also complete required subspecialty rotations that expand their clinical range and prepare them for independent practice:

  • Forensic Psychiatry
  • Emergency Psychiatry
  • Pediatric Neurology

To support individualized career paths, the program offers numerous elective opportunities, enabling fellows to pursue interests in areas such as neurodevelopmental disorders, intellectual disabilities, transitional age youth, college mental health and reproductive psychiatry.
