Emergency Medicine Medical Education & Academic Leadership Fellowship
The UH Emergency Medicine Medical Education & Academic Leadership Fellowship is designed for physicians wishing to grow into thoughtful educators who apply the principles of learning systematically and seek to advance medical education, including educational scholarship, within emergency medicine.
The fellowship builds this foundation through the pursuit of a Master's degree in Education or Health Professions Education through an institution aligned with each fellow's individual goals and educational priorities. In addition to coursework, fellows gain practical skills in medical education leadership through a variety of experiential learning opportunities.
Fellowship Experience
- Assistant Clerkship Director: Fellows support the growth and assessment of undergraduate medical learners in both the third- and fourth-year emergency medicine clinical rotations. Responsibilities include:
- Serving on the SLOE-writing committee for students pursuing emergency medicine
- Providing direct instruction in classroom and simulation settings
- Junior Assistant Program Director: Fellows contribute to the growth of the Emergency Medicine Residency through a variety of teaching, curriculum design and administrative roles within graduate medical education. To build experience navigating accreditation requirements and residency operations, fellows serve on several core residency committees, including:
- Program Evaluation Committee
- Resident Recruitment Committee
- Clinical Competency Committee
- Leadership in Continuing Medical Education: Fellows supplement peer review, continuing medical education and quality initiatives for practicing emergency medicine physicians and advanced practice providers throughout the University Hospitals system. Opportunities include involvement in curriculum design, in vivo simulation, and innovative educational modalities.
While these experiences provide the foundation of experiential learning within the fellowship, fellows are encouraged to explore additional areas of interest and apply the principles of medical education to specialized areas within emergency medicine with the support of fellowship faculty.
Fellows are also encouraged to pursue a variety of educational and leadership opportunities at both the national and local levels, including involvement in emergency medicine and medical education organizations, as well as participation in programs such as the Case Western Reserve University Center for Medical Education.
Educational Environment
University Hospitals is a primary clinical affiliate of Case Western Reserve University School of Medicine. This partnership provides extensive opportunities for involvement in undergraduate medical education. Many faculty members within the Department of Emergency Medicine contribute to the medical school's Capstone: Transition to Residency program, a required two-week course for all graduating medical students. The course utilizes high-fidelity simulation and hands-on skills training to prepare learners for Day One of residency across all specialties.
In addition, department faculty serve as preceptors for longitudinal clinical education courses and participate in standardized patient encounters and clinical skills examinations throughout the medical school curriculum.
Curriculum & Scholarship
Monthly fellowship meetings are structured around key curricular elements, including a Medical Education Journal Club and Educator's Roundtable discussions. These sessions focus on applying core educational theory and concepts to health professions education.
Fellows also develop expertise in educational research and scholarship through monthly department-wide medical education scholarship meetings, which provide opportunities to engage in research, project development and dissemination of scholarly work.
Career Development
By the completion of the fellowship, trainees are uniquely prepared to assume a variety of leadership roles within academic medicine. Through the development of a robust educational portfolio, fellows learn to articulate the theoretical foundations of their educational approach, demonstrate their growth as educators and showcase the value they bring to future academic positions.
Fellows are encouraged to present their innovative work and scholarship at national meetings, including those hosted by the Society for Academic Emergency Medicine (SAEM) and the Council of Residency Directors in Emergency Medicine (CORD).
Program alumni have gone on to academic positions across the country, including roles as Assistant Program Directors and core educational faculty within emergency medicine residency programs.
Fellowship Details
- Fellowship Length: 2 years
- Salary: $100,000 plus benefits
- Clinical Commitment: 8 shifts per month across both academic and community emergency departments
- Academic Appointment: Clinical Instructor, Case Western Reserve University School of Medicine
Educational & CME Support
Fellows receive:
- A stipend toward a Master's degree in Education or Health Professions Education at an institution aligned with their career goals
- Tuition support for two of the following educational development programs:
- ACEP/CORD Teaching Fellowship
- CORD Residency Administration Fellowship
- Harvard Simulation Instructor Training
- SAEM ARMED MedEd Program
- An additional $5,000 in CME funding for travel and academic development
