In the event of a life-threatening emergency, patients should call 9-1-1 or visit the nearest emergency department immediately.
The 24/7 emergency department at University Hospitals Lake West Medical Center provides patients and their families with the latest life-saving technology and exceptional care in a safe, comfortable environment.
If you’re sick or injured, the best place to go for care depends on your symptoms and how soon you need treatment. Many non-life-threatening conditions can be treated at an urgent care, doctor’s office or virtually. Always call 9-1-1 in a life-threatening emergency.
Services Offered at UH Lake West Emergency Department
Our highly trained emergency room physicians and nurses have the ability to quickly diagnose and treat the full spectrum of emergency medical situations. Specialty services include:
Chest Pain and Heart Attack Care
Recognizing and reacting to the early symptoms of a heart attack – such as chest pain – and reducing the time it takes to receive treatment improves your chances of survival and recovery. Our specially-trained teams of emergency department doctors, nurses and cardiologists know the early signs of a heart attack and are ready to intervene quickly.
The Chest Pain Center at UH Lake West Medical Center Emergency Department is accredited by ACC Accreditation Services, assuring you nationally recognized expertise in early heart attack care and treatment, including catheterization and open-heart surgery.
If we determine your chest pain is caused by something other than a heart attack, such as gastrointestinal conditions or a lung problem, we’ll help connect you to care for that concern.
Stroke Care
The UH Lake West emergency department is designated by The Joint Commission as a Primary Stroke Center. This means our emergency medicine specialists have the training and technology to manage acute stroke patients including rapid assessment, imaging and the ability to administer intravenous medications (tPA) to dissolve blood clots and restore blood flow to brain regions affected by a stroke.
SANE Program
Our Sexual Assault Nurse Examiners (SANE) provide compassionate care to adult and pediatric victims of sexual assault. Our SANE team is trained to collect and preserve evidence of sexual assault and testify at criminal trials.
Partnering with First Responders
We coordinate with local EMS to help heart attack patients receive treatment before they even get to the ED. Our heart emergency response time has helped us exceed the American Heart Association’s high standard of opening a blocked artery in fewer than 90 minutes, starting when the patient first arrives in the ED.
