The Ups and Downs of Elevator Modernization
University Hospitals is in the middle of a multi-year, multi-million dollar project to upgrade our elevators. We have more than 90 elevators across the buildings and garages at our UH Cleveland Medical Center campus and are working to modernize and improve them.
The project began in 2024 with the renovation and upgrade of 23 elevators, including freight elevators, parking garage elevators, well as those used by patients, caregivers and visitors. In Phase 1, we worked on elevators at UH Rainbow Babies & Children's Hospital, the Horvitz building, and the Mather/Lerner Tower of UH Cleveland Medical Center. Phase 2 is underway, some elevators will be completed by Spring, 2026 and others will be complete by late 2027.
Throughout the project, we are working to minimize the disruption of service as much as possible. Below are details of the elevators currently being modernized; most elevators have a number above the door for your reference.

Elevator 2, Lakeside Building

Elevator 57, Bolwell Building
Nearest elevator to use while this one is being renovated: 56 and 59 (in that same bank of four elevators) or 60 and 61 (around the corner; follow the signs)

Escalator
Located at the end of the Trudy Weisenberg art gallery, the escalator was closed several years ago. We are working to completely renovate and restore escalator service between floors 1 and 2 of Lerner Tower.
