One Unified Cardiac Surgery Team Across Multiple Locations

Our cardiac surgery program is based at University Hospitals Cleveland Medical Center, a tertiary and quaternary campus. The same top-rated cardiac surgeons who perform procedures at our main campus are also embedded in the communities we serve. This integration of expertise in the community offers patients advanced treatment options at the most appropriate location for their individual needs.

Our cardiac surgeons specialize in complex, multi-procedure open heart surgery (multi-valve, valve and coronary bypass, etc.) and hybrid procedures, such as coronary stenting (PCI) with valve surgery, and mechanical assist device procedures. We are highly regarded for our expertise in treating the elderly, those with advanced heart failure, and those who require multiple procedures or reoperation.

Higher Cardiac Surgery Volumes Support Better Patient Outcomes

The cardiac surgery program at University Hospitals Harrington Heart & Vascular Institute continues to grow at a rapid pace. As experts in minimally invasive cardiac surgery, our surgeons have maintained leadership in their field. One such example is the minimally invasive coronary artery bypass (MIDCAB) technique, which avoids cutting the breastbone and using a heart-lung machine. University Hospitals Harrington Heart & Vascular Institute is highly skilled performing MIDCAB as the fourth highest volume program in the country.

Our cardiac surgery clinical outcomes are on par with other nationally leading heart and vascular programs. We earned the highest 3-star rating for CABG Overall Quality by the Society of Thoracic Surgeons. Our main campus location is a certified site for heart and lung transplantation by the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS). We also received the Gold Level ELSO Award for Excellence in Life Support for our ECMO program.

Robot-Assisted Cardiac Surgery Approach Marks a First for Ohio

In 2024, University Hospitals Harrington Heart & Vascular Institute treated more than 100 patients with a robotic approach to coronary artery bypass graft (CABG) surgery. Since the launch, our cardiac surgical team has built a strong robotic cardiac surgery program, using this approach for other heart conditions—and now leads as one of the highest volume programs in the country.

Setting Standards for Perioperative Cardiac Surgery Care

University Hospitals Harrington Heart & Vascular Institute experts recently co-authored a Joint Consensus statement on perioperative care in cardiac surgery, in collaboration with the Enhanced Recovery After Surgery (ERAS) Cardiac Society, ERAS International Society and The Society of Thoracic Surgeons (STS). Published in The Annals of Thoracic Surgery, this consensus aims to advance evidence-based, interdisciplinary care pathways that enhance patient safety and optimize surgical protocols—from preoperative preparation through recovery. This latest version of the consensus statement reframes what perioperative care should encompass for each cardiac surgery patient, with a grading system of the level of evidence underpinning each recommendation.
