Steven Fitzgerald, MD, is a nationally recognized orthopedic surgeon specializing in adult reconstructive orthopedics, total joint replacement and the treatment of complex arthritis conditions. As Chief of the Division of Adult Reconstruction at University Hospitals, Dr. Fitzgerald is dedicated to helping patients regain mobility, reduce pain and return to the activities they enjoy through advanced surgical and nonsurgical treatment options.

Dr. Fitzgerald has extensive expertise in primary and revision hip and knee replacement, complex joint reconstruction and the management of degenerative joint diseases. He is committed to delivering personalized, evidence-based care while advancing innovations that improve patient outcomes and surgical quality. In his role as Director of High Reliability Medicine for Total Joint Replacement at UH, he leads initiatives focused on enhancing safety, consistency and excellence in joint replacement care.

In addition to his clinical leadership, Dr. Fitzgerald serves as Associate Professor at the Case Western Reserve University School of Medicine, where he is actively involved in educating and mentoring the next generation of orthopedic surgeons. He also holds the prestigious Kingsbury G. Heiple, MD, and Fred A. Lennon Chair in Orthopaedics at University Hospitals.

Dr. Fitzgerald earned his medical degree from the Tulane University School of Medicine after completing his undergraduate studies at Boston College. He completed his residency in orthopedic surgery and internship in general surgery at University Hospitals Cleveland Medical Center, followed by a fellowship in adult reconstructive orthopedics at the renowned Mayo Clinic.

Board certified by the American Board of Orthopaedic Surgery, Dr. Fitzgerald combines advanced surgical expertise with a patient-centered approach to help individuals achieve lasting relief from joint pain and restore their quality of life. His commitment to clinical excellence, innovation and education has established him as a leader in joint replacement and adult reconstructive orthopedic care.

Outside of work Dr. Fitzgerald appreciates spending time with his family and dogs, and is an avid golfer and skier.
