About

Stanley Bazarek MD, PhD, is a fellowship-trained neurosurgeon at University Hospitals and an assistant professor at Case Western Reserve University School of Medicine. Dr. Bazarek’s specialized clinical expertise is in the management of patients with degenerative spine disease, spinal trauma, tumors of the spine and nerves, peripheral nerve/brachial plexus injuries, nerve compression syndromes, focal spasticity, and nerve reconstruction for spinal cord injury.

After earning his undergraduate degree at Case Western Reserve University in Cleveland, Ohio, Dr. Bazarek completed an MD/PhD program at Chicago Medical School/Rosalind Franklin University of Medicine and Science. His doctoral thesis focused on the use of stem cell biology and gene therapy to engineer cells in the brain for repair.

After medical school, Dr. Bazarek continued his training at Harvard Medical School, where he completed a residency in neurological surgery, a fellowship in complex spine surgery at Brigham & Women’s Hospital and a fellowship in peripheral nerve reconstruction at Massachusetts General Hospital.

A prolific writer, Dr. Bazarek has authored and co-authored numerous articles related to his areas of expertise. He is also active in laboratory research to investigate novel strategies to enhance neural reconstruction, such as the use of stem cells to reinnervate and preserve the health of damaged nerves and muscles. He is also working with the neural engineering team at Case Western to implant peripheral nerve electrodes to restore limb function following spinal cord injury.

In his free time, Dr. Bazarek enjoys spending time with his wife and son. He is originally from Chicago and strongly believes that treating patients as he would his own family is the best guide for clinical care.
