Patrick Runnels, MD, MBA

Dr. Patrick Runnels is a nationally recognized physician leader and psychiatrist whose career has centered on driving transformation within healthcare systems to maximize value and improve access and outcomes for vulnerable and complex patient populations. He currently serves as the Chief Medical Officer for the Veale Healthcare Transformation Institute and holds the Ann S. and Anthony J. Asher Chair in Community Health at University Hospitals Health Systems in Cleveland, Ohio. Previously, he served as Chief Medical Officer of Population Health, during which time University Hospitals ranked among the most successful Accountable Care Organizations in the nation, generating nearly $200 million in shared savings.

Dr. Runnels is currently Co‑Principal Investigator on a John Templeton Foundation grant focused on studying and disseminating frameworks for transformational leadership in healthcare. Over more than 15 years, he has held numerous administrative leadership roles in both hospital and community health settings. He founded the Clinical Leadership and Transformation Academy at University Hospitals and the Public and Community Psychiatry Fellowship at Case Western Reserve University (CWRU). He also teaches Empowering Healthcare Innovation for the Healthcare MBA program at the CWRU Weatherhead School of Management.

A Professor of Psychiatry at the CWRU School of Medicine, Dr. Runnels completed medical school at the University of Missouri–Columbia, a General Psychiatry Residency at Mount Sinai Hospital in New York City, and the Public Psychiatry Fellowship at Columbia University. He also earned an Executive MBA from the Weatherhead School of Management at CWRU.
