Sickle Cell Disease Integrative Research

Research among people with sickle cell disease (SCD) at University Hospitals Connor Whole Health has focused on the use of music therapy and massage therapy to improve pain management and quality of life. Numerous studies have investigated key outcomes, including self-efficacy, pain management, mood, SCD knowledge, and healthcare adherence during the transition to adult medical care.

Music Therapy

Research findings have underscored the potential benefits of music therapy in managing pain, improving coping skills, and enhancing engagement with the healthcare system.

Massage Therapy

The MAssage Therapy for CHildren, Adolescents, and young adults (MATCHA) study evaluated the delivery and effectiveness of massage therapy for children, adolescents, and young adults with hematologic and/or oncologic conditions, including sickle cell disease (SCD). The findings support MT's effectiveness for managing acute symptoms, warranting further research to optimize its use.
