Members of your transplant team will include:

  • Nurse coordinators
  • Pulmonologist (lung disease specialist)
  • Transplant surgeon
  • Anesthesiologist
  • Social worker
  • Psychologist or psychiatrist
  • Dietitian
  • Spiritual service representative
  • Pharmacists
  • Insurance specialist to discuss coverage of the transplant process

Tests and Assessments

This dedicated team focuses on each patient’s health prior to the lung transplant, performing the following detailed evaluations:

  • Blood tests to help determine a good donor match and improve the chances that the donor organ will not be rejected.
  • Diagnostic tests to assess the patient’s lungs as well as their overall health status. Tests may include X-rays, ultrasound procedures, computed tomography (CT) scan, pulmonary function tests, lung biopsy and dental examinations. Additionally, women may receive a gynecology evaluation, Pap test and mammogram, while men may receive a PSA test.
  • Psychological and social evaluations to measure patient stress, financial concerns and level of support by family and/or significant others since these issues can significantly impact the outcome of a transplant.
  • Immunizations to decrease the chances of developing infections that can affect the transplanted lungs.
  • Smoking cessation support to help those who recently quit smoking maintain their nicotine-free lifestyle
