Yasir Abu-Omar, MD, DPhil, is the Surgical Director of the Advanced Heart Failure & Transplant Center, and the Russ and Connie Lincoln Chair in Cardiovascular Innovation at University Hospitals Harrington Heart & Vascular Institute. He is also a Clinical Professor of Surgery at Case Western Reserve University School of Medicine.

Dr. Abu-Omar earned his medical degree from the University of Aberdeen School of Medicine before earning his Doctor of Philosophy from the University of Oxford. He completed a residency in cardiothoracic surgery at Royal Papworth Hospital and is a fellow of the Royal College of Surgeons.

Dr. Abu-Omar spent more than a decade as a cardiothoracic and transplant surgeon in England before coming to the United States to join the surgical team at University Hospitals Harrington Heart & Vascular Institute. His special interests include complex heart valve surgery, minimally invasive heart valve surgery, aortic valve surgery, coronary artery bypass operations and surgery for heart failure. Dr. Abu-Omar has particular skill in performing ventricular assist device (VAD) implantations, Bi-VAD implants, heart and lung transplantations, as well as surgery for hypertrophic cardiomyopathy and pulmonary endarterectomy in patients with chronic pulmonary artery occlusions.

Beyond his surgical practice, Dr. Abu-Omar is active in professional societies and research activities. He has a passion for teaching and training other physicians, having received numerous invitations to lecture on various topics related to cardiothoracic surgery in national and international forums. He has led several prestigious clinical trials as principal investigator and authored over 100 peer-reviewed publications and abstracts.
