What is General Surgery?

In the field of general surgery, surgeons focus primarily on surgical treatment of the following areas of the body:

  • Abdominal wall
  • Breast, skin and soft tissue
  • Endocrine system
  • Gastrointestinal tract (including esophagus, stomach, liver and colon)
  • Head and neck

It can also include trauma surgery, acute care surgery and surgical oncology, as well as other areas.

Acute Care Surgery

Acute care surgery is emergency general surgery for the most critically ill and injured patients. Working closely with our emergency medicine physicians, Level I Trauma Center team and critical care specialists, our acute care surgeons are available 24 hours a day to provide timely surgical care for patients.
