Varithena Post Procedure Instructions

Post-Procedure Instructions:

  • You can resume your regular diet immediately and return to usual activities.
  • Apply an ice pack directly over the wound (20-minute intervals) to reduce swelling, bruising and pain the first few days.
  • Avoid standing still or sitting with legs down whenever possible.
  • First 48 hours: Do NOT remove the bandages or compression stockings. Do NOT take a bath or shower. Sponge bathe only. Keep bandages dry. If dressing rolls down and it’s an Ace wrap, try to reapply. If it is a Coban sticky dressing, just try to keep it up.
  • At 48 hours, remove the bandages. You may take a shower, then apply compression socks and wear 24 hours a day.
  • First 7 days: Do NOT participate in strenuous exercise (like weightlifting or squatting).
  • First 14 days: Wear the compression stockings day and night.
  • First 28 days: Walk one hour each day, which can be divided into 10 to 20-minute intervals. No sitting for long stretches of time, including car or plane trips.
  • Avoid direct sunlight to legs. If you must be in the sun, use SPF 30 sunscreen or higher on your legs for the two to three months to avoid darkening of the skin at treatment sites.
  • You may take over the counter (non-aspirin) pain relievers like Tylenol, Advil or Aleve.
  • If you develop any redness, raised area that is tender to touch, swelling, fever or drainage, please call us at 216-844-3800 or present to the nearest emergency room for evaluation if discomfort or changes are significant.
