Behavioral Health Services: Inpatient Services

In addition to providing a comprehensive range of outpatient mental health services, the University Hospitals Behavioral Health Institute offers inpatient services such as urgent assessments, consultation services and interventional psychiatric procedures. Urgent Assessment

UH Behavioral Health Institute provides emergency psychiatric assessment and treatment. Referrals for these services are available through:

• An emergency psychiatric assessment team: Provides on-site and virtual assessment and centralized referral services in UH emergency departments across the system
• Acute inpatient services: UH provides acute inpatient services at multiple facilities across the region. These facilities care for children, adolescents, adults and geriatric patients with cognitive, behavioral and psychiatric conditions. Additionally, UH offers the only specialized medical-psychiatric services in Ohio, providing care for adults with psychiatric and medical conditions too severe to be treated in a medical or psychiatric setting alone.

Consultation Services

We offer inpatient psychiatry and addiction consultation (in person and virtual) to medical and surgical patients at most UH hospitals.

Psychiatric symptoms are often present in patients receiving medical or surgical care. Through our consultation-liaison psychiatry services, we offer comprehensive care for patients with both psychiatric and medical symptoms. These psychiatric symptoms include:

• Anxiety or depression caused by medical issues
• Acute confusion associated with delirium (mental status changes)
• Substance withdrawal during a lengthy hospitalization

We also offer specialized on-site consultation and co-management of psychiatric conditions within specialty areas such as cancer, transplant services, nutritional health and bariatric surgery, sleep medicine and UH Foley Elderhealth Center.

Inpatient Adult Services

UH and our joint venture partners offer inpatient addiction services and inpatient psychiatry services for adults, including specialized inpatient psychiatric care for geriatric patients.

Interventional Psychiatric Procedures

Located at UH Lake West Medical Center, our interventional psychiatry clinic offers procedures including electroconvulsive therapy (ECT), ketamine infusion therapy, nasal esketamine (Spravato) and transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS). These evidence-based procedures can offer hope for patients with treatment-resistant mental health conditions.
