UH Department of Psychiatry Boasts National Experts and a Rich Legacy of Innovation

The Department of Psychiatry at University Hospitals enhances the lives of people affected by mental illness and addictions through comprehensive clinical services, leading-edge treatment and innovative programs in mood disorders, addiction recovery, child and adolescent psychiatry, community mental health, forensics, and psychiatry and medicine.

Since its creation, the Department has built a rich legacy of clinical excellence and medical discovery. Our leadership team is comprised of national experts recognized for their discoveries of new treatments for mental illnesses and for their role in educating psychiatry’s leaders of tomorrow.

Founded in 1937, the Department moved to the main campus of University Hospitals in 1956, making it one of the first psychiatry departments in the country to be located on the same grounds as the medical and surgical teams of an academic medical center. Starting in the late 1980s, the department enjoyed more than a decade of national prominence for its research in schizophrenia, and growing programs in mood disorders, geriatrics and child and adolescent psychiatry. In 2000, its research emphasis shifted to its nationally recognized programs in mood disorders and adolescent psychiatry.

The Department has continued evolving over the years as our hub at University Hospitals Cleveland Medical Center has successfully integrated our services throughout UH system and invested nearly $20 million in facilities and programs. Our inpatient facilities at University Hospitals Richmond Medical Center and University Hospitals Rainbow Babies & Children’s Hospital are state-of-the-art, and our spacious ambulatory offices at the W.O. Walker Center are now complemented by services offered in more than a dozen clinical sites across Northeast Ohio.

From the beginning, the Department of Psychiatry has taken a forward-thinking approach to clinical care and how it is delivered. And that legacy of innovation and progressive thinking continues today. From delivering care at more convenient locations throughout Northeast Ohio to deep brain stimulation for bi-polar disorder to focusing on emerging areas of care such as specialized care for older adults and transitioning for college-aged youth, the Department continues to evolve and meet the needs of the communities it serves.
