Interventional Simulation Lab
The Case Western Reserve University/University Hospitals Cleveland Medical Center Diagnostic Radiology Residency Program has developed and designed a curriculum for one of the world’s first simulation labs dedicated to interventional radiology. With our state of the art VIST simulator, our residents can perfect their endovascular skills on their own time before even rotating through the interventional radiology division. This allows residents to rapidly advance their technical skills as well as improve patient care. Residents are able to practice many technical procedural skills, including:
- Inferior vena cava (IVC) filter placement and retrieval
- Neuro-interventional skills
- Peripheral vascular disease angioplasty and stent placement
- Renal artery stent placement
- Uterine artery embolization
Additionally, our simulation lab is equipped with multiple body imaging phantoms that are ultrasound, computed tomography (CT) and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) compatible. Using these devices, residents perfect their procedural skills in image-guided biopsies and sampling.
This novel approach to interventional radiology education has resulted in multiple research opportunities, including many oral presentations at international radiology society meetings. We are continuing to expand our technology and curriculum offerings in this dedicated interventional radiology simulation lab.
