Research
University Hospitals boasts a robust and diverse research portfolio. In 2023, the system secured nearly $200 million in research funding, reported 100 invention disclosures, and oversaw more than 3,450 active clinical research studies—the largest number reported by any Northeast Ohio institution on ClinicalTrials.gov. Additionally, University Hospitals faculty and trainees contributed over 1,500 peer-reviewed manuscripts.
Opportunities to engage in research abound at the Neurological Institute. The Departments of Neurology and Neurosurgery have nearly $ 20 million of research funding with 45 ongoing research studies
In the Neuroscience Intensive Care Unit, a key research focus lies in advanced informatics. The transformative power of Big Data, propelled by advancements in the Internet of Things (IoT), analytics, and artificial intelligence (AI), is shaping innovative solutions in healthcare.
In collaboration with Case Western Reserve University (CWRU) College of Engineering, University Hospitals developed the Integrated Medical Environment (tIME™), a platform designed to facilitate real-time data acquisition, time synchronization, and advanced analysis. The ultimate goal of tIME™ is to achieve Precision Medicine in critical care, with research efforts coordinated through the Case’s Center for Connected Health Innovation (CCHI).
Neurocritical Care Fellows are integral to these research initiatives, participating in at least one clinical or research project related to neurocritical care. Fellows will disseminate their scholarly activity through a combination of the following avenues:
- Presenting at Neurology Grand Rounds
- Delivering research presentations (poster or oral) at national meetings
- Teaching workshops
- Sharing quality improvement initiatives
- Writing grants
- Publishing non-peer-reviewed or peer-reviewed articles, book chapters or electronic resources
- Developing textbooks or webinars
- Serving on professional committees
- Acting as journal reviewers
Furthermore, fellows will enroll in CRSP 401, Introduction to Clinical Research, a summer course at Case Western Reserve University. This course equips participants with a strong foundation in clinical research language, statistical computing, and practical problem-solving, offering hands-on opportunities to apply lecture concepts effectively.
