Welcome to the St. John Medical Center Family Medicine Residency Program
Thank you for your interest in University Hospitals St. John Medical Center’s Family Medicine Residency Program. Our residency program delivers both a rigorous and rewarding training program for aspiring family physicians. Our three-year program combines inpatient and outpatient experiences, providing a diverse and rich experience for our residents. Our curriculum allows for flexibility, giving each resident the opportunity to tailor their training to their future practice. We commit to not only provide excellent and compassionate care to our patients but also take care of one another by providing our residents with resources, support and ample time to live their lives outside of residency. We pride ourselves on the strong relationships and supportive environment that our residents have with faculty, nursing, staff, and residents of other specialties here at UH St. John Medical Center. As a former graduate of this program, I can attest to the dedication of the faculty and staff to its residents. As part of the University Hospitals Osteopathic Consortium, our residents are exposed to additional teaching environments and benefit from relationships with residents outside of our home hospital.
As you continue to look through our website, you will find more details about our program. We believe that you will find our residency program offers unique opportunities that allow us to stand out from the rest. If you believe that UH St. John Medical Center is right for you, we invite you to apply to our program through the ERAS website. If you have any further questions, please feel free to contact us. We look forward to hearing from you.

About the Program
As of July 1, 2017, our Family Medicine Residency program has received Initial Accreditation from the ACGME. We are also currently accredited through the AOA.
Graduates of our program have gone on to successful practices in the Cleveland area and nationwide. We have a 23 percent retention rate in our hospital system and 46 percent of our graduates have stayed in the Cleveland area. Twenty-five percent of residents practice osteopathic manipulative medicine (OMM) in their own clinics, and 100 percent of our graduates have successfully passed their Board Exams.
Our residents benefit from a flexible curriculum and work-life balance. We offer several resident wellness opportunities, including meet-and-greets, chair massages, stress management resiliency training and an employee assistance program.
Residents of the Family Medicine program gain experience in both the inpatient and outpatient settings. They also participate in formal teaching in the nursing home setting and participate in several community outreach events and programs. This comprehensive approach allows our residents to further enhance their training and practice of medicine while also shaping them to become better physicians. Our curriculum allows for flexibility and is designed to help each resident meet their own individual interests while at the same time providing each resident a high-quality educational experience.
At the Family Medicine Clinic, residents see their own panel of patients under the guidance of our faculty. There is a large population of patients, which allows each resident to see a consistent variance in patient demographics, diagnoses and procedures.
Residents often have opportunities to interact and teach medical students and interns in the clinic and hospital settings.
A sample of our didactic curriculum includes osteopathic medicine, behavioral health, women’s health, pediatrics, practice management and nursing home care. We also participate in at least two medical simulation and skills procedure labs annually.
Our brand new, state-of-the-art Family Medicine Practice has 14 exam rooms and a separate testing room. There is also a radiology suite, lab, concierge services and urgent care on the premises, which allows our patients to receive quality and convenient care under one roof.
Our residents spend time in several nursing homes in the area on a monthly basis.
Our Family Medicine residents are also found teaching at health fairs, local schools and other community events.
